Close to the middle of noon, as a surge of clouds thankfully obscured the otherwise burning sun, a peculiar little group made up of a human, a Bouffalant, and a Zangoose could be seen moving down the route. [break][break]
Allie hopped along, making sure her skips were high rather than long in an attempt to avoid getting too far ahead of her friends. That attempt was rather futile, though, as she always managed to shoot in front of the other two. Avery was simply walking along calmly, eyes trained on the girl to make sure that he did not lose sight of her by accident. Alex, in contrast, was jittery and glancing around everywhere. This was the duo's first time out of Pavaline Park, after all. [break][break]
After a few moments, Allie gave up and fell back into a walking gait, slowing down to let the other two catch up. "How're you two enjoying life out of the park so far?" She inquired. Avery gave the Zangoose equivalent of a shrug, while Alex glanced over at Avery, before attempting to mimic the movement. "I guess that means you're both fine?"

Rei sat in some tall grass, waiting and scanning the environment for wild Pokémon of interest to appear. With the watchtower under Plasma control, she didn’t feel the need to worry too much about Resistance movement on Route 3. Those 2 lunatics were still on the loose though, that could be trouble if those terrorists decided to show their face, she simply wasn’t ready for a real fight. Her team was just too young still. She was hoping to find something out here to add some more diversity to her team, so far, she’d only heard reports of avian and bug Pokémon being common here.

‘Wait, what was that bobbing above the grass line, something blue?’ There were other things moving over there as well. Rei crawled closer to the path to investigate. Another traveler, with Pokémon out no less and she was…. skipping? This was either an extremely confident or naïve trainer. Given the route inhabitants known tendency to be easily riled up, and how uneasy this trainer’s Pokémon seemed to be, Rei had to assume the latter.  Who was this person? Well, only one way to find out for sure.

Standing up, and putting on that service industry smile, she brushes some of the grass off of her pants and jacket, waves, and approaches the stranger, “Greetings fellow traveler! I’d be cautious about drawing too much attention to yourself. Pokémon around here startle easily I’m told. All that skipping around is sure to draw unwanted attention from the wildlife.” Making an open gesture to the surrounding grass and peaks, “What brings you to Route 3 on foot anyways? Surely there are safer ways to travel.”

The skittish Alex was the first to sense the approaching trainer. She raised her head in that direction, immediately alerting Avery, who turned his gaze in the same direction. Allie took a moment but caught on, turning to the newcomer. She took a few steps forward to stand in front of Alex and Avery. The former was taking a few steps backwards, while the latter eyed the new human carefully. [break][break]
"Hello!" Allie responded to their greeting in a friendly manner. "Nice to meet you! I, uh...I suppose that makes sense." She suddenly felt bad for skipping along. She was less noisy than usual, considering she usually hummed or sang as she skipped along, but that wasn't enough. [break][break]
Negativity didn't stay with Allie for long, though, as she brightened up after a moment. "I'm just trying to find somewhere where I can let my friends out without it being illegal, since this is outside of any cities or towns! Not sure why that law even came about...Wait, speaking of, do you know how this current war thing started? 'Cause I don't know anything about it yet..."

Well, looks like it was time for Rei to do her job, this was clearly an unlicensed trainer. She’d have to play things carefully though. This profound ignorance could just be an act to get her to lower her guard. Just because this stranger didn’t match the description of Silver or Crystal doesn’t mean they couldn’t be resistance working with them.

Maintaining the professional smile, Rei motions down the path, “My, it does sound like we have a lot to talk about.” She begins walking, checking to see if her new friend is following, “By the way, what is your name, friend? I am Rei Asakura”

“For starts, Pokémon training isn’t illegal, per say, you just need to have a license to legally be a trainer . Sort of like what’d one would need to legally possess any other sort of deadly weapon, and believe me, trained Pokémon are deadly weapons. I’ve had robbers try to set them on me before.” Rei’s sunny disposition is briefly broken as a glower expression crosses her face, remembering the incident.

She sighs, and then resumes the happier demeanor, “As for how this all started, well, it started with a rumor. The rumor of a strange and frightening new condition that was infecting Pokémon called ROT. It caused a number of symptoms, mainly increased aggression in Pokémon, and it mutated quickly. People panicked and worried that it would start spreading to humans.” She rolls her eyes, “Honestly, there’s a lot of misinformation around it, the truth is always the first casualty of any war. All I know for sure is ROT was running rampant and something needed to be done about human and Pokémon interaction to prevent the spread so that’s when the restriction on training started. Some people shouted conspiracy about the whole thing and took up arms against Plasma.”

Rei turns to the woman travelling with her, “So what brings you to Anrui? I can only assume you’re a recent arrival if you haven’t heard much about this yet.”

Allie took a moment to understand before trotting along behind Rei. She took the other's advice on being softer, neglecting to skip this time. "I'm Allie Evans! And these two are Alex and Avery!" She gestured to each of the two respectively as she introduced them. Alex still shied away, reluctant to trust this stranger, while Avery tentatively sniffed at Rei. [break][break]
As the other spoke, Allie listened intently. She needed to have a license? She blinked, a little confused. "Where do I get a license then? The professor I met at the lab was very grouchy and pretty much shooed me right out." [break][break]
Observing Rei's facial expression, Allie chose to keep her mouth shut about the robbery. It was clear that it was a bad memory for the other. [break][break]
A disease. That affected pokemon. So there was a restriction placed on training? "Wait, why would a restriction on training solve the problem?" Allie asked, genuinely confused. [break][break]
"Oh, I'm here in Anrui for some new inspiration and a new start! I'm a pokemon performer from Kalos, and I like to play around with unconventional stuff, but I started running low on creativity, so I decided to go somewhere new." Allie explained. [break][break]
"Of all the reasons I might have been asked to leave my original team behind for, I was not expecting it to be some sort of war going on here!" She added, her tone sounding more of an exclamation than something she felt upset about.

“Allie Evans, what a lovely name. I’ll do my best to remember it.” She smiles warmly at Allie, before looking to the strange creature at her waist. She bends down a bit, to put her face a little closer to the zangoose's, “Ooh, look at you. Aren’t you a curious little fellow?” She lets Avery sniff at her some before trying to give them chin scritches. If they accepted, she’d do that for a little while, and even give some to the shy Pokémon that was keeping their distance if they approached and requested it, before continuing their walk in the direction of the Watch Tower.

A troubled look crossed Rei’s face, “Oh? Where was this lab you went to where the professor shooed you out? It’s a shame someone with that much esteem was so rude to you.” Her face quickly brightens back up though, “Well, it is currently only legal to have and train Pokémon if you work with Plasma. This way it can be better monitored and regulated. There are certain duties expected of you, obviously. Like contain any outbreaks of ROT you come across, fight ‘Resistance’ terrorists if you come across any, things like that. Other than that, it’s been pretty free-reign.”

Rei nods, this was an expected question, one that she had trouble with before studying virology too. “Well, it is important to keep human and Pokémon interactions at a minimum to prevent any potential interspecies transmission of ROT. A human outbreak of ROT would be disastrous, and nearly happened before the restriction on training. There were confirmed human cases before it was quelled.” She motions around, to the hills and trees they were walking passed, “Trainers travel more than the average person and come into contact with Pokémon way more as well, this greatly increases that risk factor for it to mutate again. So, it must be kept in check until the cure has been finished.”

“Oh? Kalos, I’ve never been there, but I’m told it’s absolutely lovely. I’m from Kanto originally myself. What sort of thing does a ‘Pokémon Performer’ do? Is it like an actor, but you work with Pokémon?  If so, it sounds like it could be very dangerous, but equally exciting. I do hope you find the creative spark you’re looking for here.” Her face was alight with genuine interest and curiosity.

Allie beams back, before glancing down at Avery. He jumped a little at Rei's sudden approach, but after realising that she just wanted to scratch him on the chin, calmed down a little and allowed her to do it. He appeared more jumpy than he had been with Allie's approach. In response to that, Alex refused to approach Rei any more, instead moving to use Allie as a wall between her and Rei. [break][break]
"Alex judges people based on what Avery thinks of them." Allie explained to Rei. Avery was not rejecting Rei's scritching, at least. That's a start. [break][break]
"I think he was a professor since he was at the lab, but he wasn't very nice, and most regions have nice professors to encourage those starting on their journeys...though I suppose journeys aren't a thing here anymore. He seemed to dislike Plasma as well..." Allie recalled her encounter. [break][break]
The mere thought of having to subject yourself to being ordered around just so you could have pokemon friends legally made Allie wince, and she internally decided that she would rather train illegally than let herself get ordered around. Especially if some of those orders required fighting! "What is the resistance anyways? What have they done?"[break][break]
To be frank, Allie didn't really understand what Rei was saying about the disease, but by this point she was learning so much that she decided not to ask more about it. [break][break]
"As a pokemon performer, I get on stage and perform alongside my pokemon friends! They have to learn to use their moves in non-combative situations. I usually organise choreography and music as well, but I've yet to learn enough about my new friends to figure out their personal preferences. I don't consider myself an actor though, since I don't exactly act in like movie contexts and stuff? I think that kind of people can be found in another region though. Either Unova or Sinnoh, I'm not sure."

Rei arches an eyebrow momentarily at the comment about one Pokémon basing their decisions off of the others, “Sounds like quite a duo you have here.”

 

She raises her eyebrows and makes a small gasp, “Wait, was that in Hyo? I’ve heard that’s where the Resistance professor is… Coryn, I believe. I’m amazed you found it and they just let you walk right out with that information.” She nods, “But yes, ‘adventures’ like other regions have are no more in Anrui. At least for now… and honestly, with the way things are I think it would be irresponsible to give Pokémon out to children and set them loose into the wilds anyways.”

“Ah, the Resistance. They are the warmongers trying to ‘bring peace’ to the region by attacking cities and destroying civilian buildings. They claim to be trying to ‘liberate’ the region from the tyranny of Plasma.” She peers towards Allie and makes an open gesture with her arms,  “Tell me, does a group that bombs hospitals, killing the sick, injured, and medics inside, while starving people living in cities they occupy sound like anything more than a campaign of terror? That’s all the Resistance is.” Rei hangs her head, hints of tears forming at her eyes, “I lived in Cain when they ‘freed’ us. It was awful, people were damned near killing each other over basic necessities. I never want to see people living in such squalor again. That is why I fight."

Rei listens intently to Allies description of what a Pokémon Performer does. “Wow, it sounds almost like a circus, but more graceful. Hopefully we can see something like that here once ROT is cured and the war is over.”

Oh wow, evidently she had just straight up found the headquarters (?) of the Resistance? Allie supposed that if she was running a secret organisation and it got found by some random kid, she would be scared of the kid tattling their secrets as well. Then again, what else did Rei think they would do apart from letting her go? [break][break]
Rei did not have a high opinion of the resistance, that much was clear. Allie pursed her lips in thought as she listened to Rei's words. Well, there has to be a reason behind how they act. People committing mass terrorist acts, starving people-there's got to be some sort of reason behind it. A higher cause that they see to be more important than the lives of people, for example. [break][break]
"That sounds...Pretty bad." Allie did have the social awareness to know that Rei has nothing but negative opinions to mention about the Resistance, though, and refrained from asking her about the reasons the Resistance could have for doing these things. She made a mental note to find someone from the Resistance and ask them about their actions, though. "It makes sense that you'd want to fight against them, then, since you've suffered at their hands."[break][break]
"I suppose you can say that?" Allie shrugged, not sure about why Rei would compare performing to a circus. "And yes! I do hope I can get a chance to perform here...though knowing myself, I'll find some way to perform in the middle of the road anyways!"

It would be interesting to see how this woman could perform with Pokémon. They were used primarily as weapons in this region for those that were even allowed to have them. They were objects of terror for those that didn’t. Pokémon were to be feared, not understood, to the ‘commonfolk’.

Wiping the starts of tears from her eyes, Rei straightens up and puts on a more serious expression. This wasn't the time to get caught up in the past, “I am enjoying our talk, but, sadly, there is a bit of business I must attend to, and to be to the point, it is my job to detain unregistered trainers, which you appear to be.” She crosses her arms behind her back. Eyeing the trainer and her two Pokémon severely. “The way I see it, unless you do actually have a valid ID you can show me, we can handle this situation one of 3 ways.” She raises 1 finger, “Option 1, we fight and you get brought in and arrested. This is not a preferred outcome, and I hope you’re smart enough not to choose it.” She raises a second finger, “Option 2.” She opens her arms in a welcoming gesture, “You join Plasma, this way you will be allowed to keep your Pokémon legally and there will be no trouble between you and us anymore. Outside of the occasional job, your life likely won’t even be impacted too much.” She shakes her head, “I’m sorry if this isn’t something suitable for you. I don’t make the rules, it is just my duty to enforce them.”

“However, life is not always black and white,” She raises a third finger, “Option 3.” Her lips curl with a dark smile, “Tell me everything you know about the resistance base, where it was, what was inside, that sort of thing and return your Pokémon to their balls so there’s deniability that you are even a trainer. If I like what information you can give me, I may just forget about ever seeing your unlicensed Pokémon at all, Ms. Evans.”

Rei rests on hand on her ball belt, the other, extended towards Allie, inviting her to speak. “How this plays out is entirely up to you. Please, consider these options carefully.”
