SAM [MERCY] NIEMI.
THE RELUCTANT POKEMON
AGE | GENDER | ALLEGIANCE | OCCUPATION |
NINETEEN. | MALE. | PLASMA | ASSISTANT SCIENTIST |
APPEARANCE
Mercy stands at around 5'3" tall, slightly shorter than average but not by too much - although he tends to wear insoles or heels to make himself look slightly taller. He has a pretty average build, having no real muscle to show off and carrying only a slight amount of weight. When it comes to complexion, Mercy is very pale and burns easily in direct sunlight - he tends to keep himself covered up to prevent this. It can be quite hard to tell currently that only a few years ago Mercy was in a critical condition with severe poisoning.
Mercy's has naturally black hair, which he bleaches and dyes a bright blue by himself. It's extremely common to see him with a slightly different shade of blue after a while, just because he's not that great at keeping the colour consistent each time. His eyes are also a bright blue, usually the same shade as his dyed hair. Mercy tends to keep his hair relatively short, not quite reaching his shoulders. Even if he tries to style it properly, Mercy's hair is almost always messy and out of control. Sometimes he uses clips to hold it back, and it's just long enough to put up in a very messy ponytail if he really needs it out of the way.
When it comes to clothing, Mercy isn't really into fashion - preferring to stick to mainly casual and comfy clothes that feel good rather than look good. When he gets to choose his own outfits, he wears a lot of hoodies and baggy t-shirts - only occasionally choosing to wear something different or more fancy. He prefers blue or white clothing, and has an obvious preference for softer fabrics.
He currently doesn't get to wear these comfortable outfits very often, however. A lot of his current wardrobe has been chosen by his parents, and tends to be a lot more formal than he feels comfortable with. Instead of hoodies and soft fabrics, he has to wear shirts and ties and fitted blazers. This is all so he gives off the right impression, mainly for his parents' reputations rather than his own.
One thing to note is Mercy' scarf, one of the main things that stays constant in his personal outfits. Even when he's dressed formally he will have the scarf with him or nearby, even if he can't wear it during those times. He doesn't really wear the scarf for warmth most of the time, having it loose rather than wrapped around his neck - it's more of a comfort item than something practical. The colours of this scarf have dulled over time, and the fabric looks slightly worn away in places - but Mercy refuses to get rid of it.
Mercy has a lot of old scars in various areas across his body, and almost always has a new bandage or plaster whenever someone meets him - although they may be hidden under his clothes. Most of the larger scars are old injuries from when he was younger, and some of the newer injuries are caused by his own clumsiness. His biggest scar is a large slash coming down from his shoulder, which was caused by a Pokemon attack in his early teens.

PERSONALITY
POSITIVE - FORGIVING [TO A FAULT] - PEACEFUL - COMPASSIONATE - LOYAL [TO HIS FRIENDS] - FRIENDLY NEGATIVE - SELF-CRITICAL - MEEK [SOMETIMES TOO OBEDIENT] - ANXIOUS [TENDS TO OVERTHINK EVERYHTING] - HESITANT - CLUMSY | The personality that Mercy shows is drastically different depending on who he is around, and can also be slightly influenced by how he is feeling at any specific time. Around people who don't know him or his family, people he introduces himself as Mercy to, he can come across as a very friendly and trustworthy person - the kind of person who can light up a room by just being there. He gives off the impression of someone who finds making friends to be an easy task, especially if they're able to give and take a little bit of teasing. Mercy also has a tendency to make jokes, sometimes at the expense of himself, which can give off the impression of someone who doesn't take things seriously. In honesty though, a lot of this is currently just a front or an act that he puts on. He shows a slightly more true version of himself around family and colleagues - basically anyone who would know him as Sam and not Mercy. He tends to overthink things, and tries to keep to himself - withdrawing from social situations wherever possible. Mercy hates conflict, and will do anything he can to avoid it - even if it means he has to do things he disagrees with to avoid conflict with his family and Plasma as a whole. Despite being a member of Plasma, due to his family ties, Mercy is personally against them. Not that he likes the Resistance much better, due to damage caused by both sides of the conflict. He really wants to distance himself from everything, to run away from his life as Sam and live a more neutral life as Mercy - but he is too scared to even try right now and doesn't feel confident in his ability to actually get away. Mercy doesn't really have a preference when it comes to Pokemon, he's not even sure he wants to be a trainer at all. He does like Pokemon, but he tends to get a bit nervous around them if they show any signs of aggression. This is especially true when it comes to poison-type Pokemon, which he has a debilitating phobia of. Just being around poison-type Pokemon can cause MErcy to stumble over his words even more than normal, and if one seems aggressive at all he completely freezes up. Mercy also has a sever phobia of illness, especially any thought of being ill himself - if anyone starts to feel ill near him, he will remove himself from the situation as soon as possible. |
BACKGROUND
CW: mentions of abuse / neglect
Mercy's birth was unplanned, not quite an accident although his parents might describe it this way at times. For the first few years of his life, Mercy very rarely saw his parents - their work as Plasma scientists taking priority over the needs of their son. While he was still too young to look after himself, Mercy was looked after by an ever-changing caste of carers - none of them really staying long enough for him to grow attached. Once he was old enough to look after himself though, it wasn't uncommon to see him left at home for days at a time while his parents were away at work - although he did have a strict schedule of intensive home-schooling sessions with various tutors meaning he wasn't always fully alone.
Things weren't always better when his parents were home, with them spending a lot of time actively ignoring Mercy as they got on with any more work they still had to do. If he bothered them too much, even asking them for help with his basic needs, they would often lash out in anger and annoyance. Mercy was already a pretty clumsy child, so any marks usually went unnoticed and were easily explained away. If he ever tried to bring up the incidents with either of his parents, he was often left questioning the truth himself due to his parents gaslighting and denial.
With no older or younger siblings, and no other family members to help him, Mercy spent a lot of his childhood feeling lonely or trapped - almost convinced this was just how things were meant to be. He was honestly too scared to speak out against it anyway.
When Mercy was around thirteen years old, he started to try and sneak out - even if it was only for an hour at a time at most. He couldn't stand being inside that home any longer, and with his parents away at work so much it became a lot easier to not get caught - especially on days when he had large breaks between tutoring sessions. During this time he found a small group of teens around his own age; and while it was difficult to socialise to start with, he soon learnt how to make friends through mimicry and jokes - copying their behaviours and mannerisms in order to seem less out of place. He was never truly close to any of them, but he was liked enough to be accepted - something that was honestly a new feeling at the time.
Over the next year or two, some of his friends starter to show interest in joining the Resistance - actively fighting against Plasma. Of course none of them knew Mercy's family connection to the group, and Mercy was already going by whatever nicknames they gave him rather than his actual family name - partly because his parents were relatively well-known within Plasma and he was scared they would find out he had been sneaking out. While with them, Mercy played along and showed interest in joining with them - not wanting to lose them and end up alone once again. In truth, he didn't want to join. Even with new knowledge about Plasma from an outside perspective, he didn't want to join a group that would bomb both a hospital and a charity ball. But his need for acceptance outweighed his need to make the right decision, and Mercy found himself agreeing to leave home and join them.
Mercy ran away from home in the middle of the night just a few days later, but he never made it to Ava Labs. In an attempt to stay hidden on his way Hyo City, and the outskirts where it was rumoured the Lab resided, Mercy made his way through Fie Forest - completely unprepared for any encounters with wild Pokemon or traps. Mercy was attacked by a group of aggressive Sevipers, along with a few other Pokemon that resided within the forest. While he did manage to eventually escape the forest alive, he was injured and poisoned and quickly passed out in the wilds of Anrui.
He was eventually found, and rushed to safety - a large slash coming down from his shoulder and what looked like bite marks or poison sting wounds on various areas of his body. Instead of ending up in hospital, Mercy was taken home and received medical care from a Plasma doctor. To begin with he started to get worse, the poison still trying to make its way through his body. He spent over a year recovering before he was well enough again.
He never told his parents why he was around Fie Forest that night, their treatment towards him would only get worse if they knew he had been trying to join the resistance. He still doesn't know what happened to his friends, if they made it to the labs themselves, but he doesn't have the confidence to look into it - especially not after leaning about the Kain City riots that had occurred while he was still recovering.
In an attempt to save face for the family name, and to keep an eye on Mercy so he couldn't run away again, his parents forced him to start working with them when he was around seventeen years old. He could only work as an assistant, not allowed near anything more important until he proved his loyalty and worked up the ranks himself. For the next two years this was how things were, and Mercy resigned himself to this fate - seeing no way that he would actually be able to get away again.
To his parents, and most of Plasma, he was just an obedient member who took after his parents and wouldn't go against Plasma - and this was partly true due to his own issues with conflict and fighting back.
But he still wanted to escape. Escape his family, escape Plasma, maybe even escape Anrui as a whole.
