THE Nurturing POKEMON
AGE | GENDER | ALLEGIANCE | OCCUPATION |
twenty-three. | cis female. | neutral. | gardener. |
APPEARANCE
gemma stands at about 5'4 and weighs around 175 lbs, being a little thick in the stomach and legs. her skin is a warm, middling brown tone, with a few spots of darker freckles here and there on her face and arms from being out in the sun frequently. she wears red circular lenses over her flat, round nose and purple-brown eyes, and her full lips almost always feature a sunny smile or grin. all in all, her face gives the impression of a very sweet, steadfast, honest young woman.
her auburn hair takes the shape of a bob around her face, though it's been styled into carefully maintained dreadlocks. her hair frames her oval-shaped face, just barely reaching past her chin. it's thick and curly in its natural shape.
in terms of clothes, gemma dresses modestly. she adores cheesy flower-print shirts and pants, as well as long, flowy skirts with sandals. her style can primarily be described as "bohemian", though she's maybe not quite stylish enough, and could even be called frumpy at times. she almost always wears at least one hair tie on her wrist so she can tie her hair back if need be while gardening.

PERSONALITY
POSITIVE - cheery - positive - studious - kind-hearted - nurturing NEGATIVE - anxious - naive - avoids conflict - lacks principle - soft-hearted | gemma is a friendly soul, easy to get along with in every way. perhaps a little too easy-- she goes out of her way to avoid offending people and starting fights, to the point that she'll even pretend to believe things she doesn't. it's definitely a weak point of hers that she'd like to improve upon, but growing up the way she did, she couldn't help becoming a little spineless. this is likely because of her intense anxiety in a variety of different fields. she was isolated for the first half of her life, and taught that the world was out to get her. thankfully she's since learned differently, but the lingering remains of her fears are still there. she's considerably germaphobic, and a bit of a hypochondriac. she's constantly cleaning and washing herself, and if she contracts even the smallest illness, it sends her paranoia into overdrive. she's anxious, too, about general world affairs, and meeting people, and whether it's going to rain too much and drown her plants, or-- you get the point. she's an intelligent, soft-hearted young woman who's always doing her best to keep up with the rest of society. she doesn't hold a lot of strong beliefs, but her number one love is nature. her garden is the one place she can let loose and not worry so much. she loves to care for plants, pokemon, and other people. gemma tries her best to keep a fiercely positive outlook, even when things get dark. this can be both her best and her worst quality, as she can be a little overbearing at times, thanks to her worries over whether everything will be okay. she's still learning how to be herself, and how to develop her own thoughts and opinions. |
BACKGROUND
gemma was raised solely by her father., at first. she didn't know her mother, and she didn't understand why until she was older. for most of her early life, she was extremely sheltered, treated as fragile and easily breakable. this was because her father claimed she had an illness he called "rosmund's disease", an illness that greatly weakened her immune system, and which could be passed on to other people if she were to come in contact with them. until she was ten, she was home schooled, and had little to no contact with other people. she fully believed everything her father told her, and developed a near-crippling fear of germs and illness, to the point that she had full-blown panic attacks when she caught something as simple as a common cold.
then her aunt stepped into her life. she filed for custody of gemma when she found out how she'd been living. the case grew and grew as more was uncovered. when gemma was about ten and a half, she finally discovered the truth: "rosmund's disease" didn't exist. the medicine she'd been taking to "treat" it ever since she was a toddler was actually HIV+ medicine. she was born HIV+, passed down from her mother, who had been cut out of her father's life once that had been discovered. and instead of telling her the truth, and letting her be a normal girl, her father had instilled a deathly fear of the outside world and all illnesses in her, because he didn't understand how the disease worked. he didn't want anyone to know his daughter was HIV+, so he made something up. it was unknown what his plan was, for later in gemma's life; it's possible, thanks to his lack of understanding, he didn't expect her to live very long.
from there, gemma's father lost custody of her to her aunt and her aunt's girlfriend. she was re-introduced to her mother, who had since found a loving husband, and took her mother and stepfather's name after she decided to live with them instead.
the hard part was treating her anxiety, not her disease. thanks to modern medicine, her life expectancy wasn't that much lower than that of an average woman. but her father had made her a germaphobe, and even a hypochondriac. it was decided that it would be for the best if gemma underwent exposure therapy, gradually experiencing all the things she was afraid to do out of fear of becoming ill.
the best way, it was decided, was for her mother to teach her how to garden.
at first, gemma was terrified. it was a very slow and painful process; she wouldn't touch the dirt, even with gloves on, at first. it took over two years for her to adjust fully, and by the time she was thirteen, she found she absolutely adored gardening, and nature, and everything about it. she studied hard in school to learn everything she could, and she took over the garden entirely, nurturing it and raising her plants so they grew big and strong. she even went to university to study botany. when she returned home, she realized that her dream was to become a caretaker of plants and pokemon, and to raise a garden so beloved that not even plasma would dare attack it. in essence, she wished to create an area like verona city, a neutral territory that took no sides.
that's been her dream for the past year or so, and she's been chasing it ever since.
