Down by the Bay [Nixie/Malachi]

Nixie loved beach parties. She loved the beach as a default but parties where this girl’s bread and butter. What she loved most about them was the relative anonymity where everyone was buzzed on bbq or booze and more friendly than they normally would be. It was that familiarity and appeal that made Nixie’s heart race. If the smell of sunscreen, bbq, booze, sweat, and pheromones wasn’t enough to give her a thrill she had her surfboard in tow. It was one of the newer models that where, in theory, shark and shark pokemon proof. She hadn’t personally tested it but her former classmate had designed an optical illusion with the black and white horizontal stripes on the underside of the board. After a bit of visiting and partying around, Nixie took her surfboard with its elegant image of a Milotic in Edo Japan inspired artwork on the topside and headed out into the waves. Now, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch any of the fruity adult beverages she had were already processed through her system and she was not, by any means, headed out into the waves tipsy. Once she was far enough away from shore that the waves were louder than the music did she stop her paddling and float along the wave lines watching for a swell.

There were smells all over the place, in and out of the water, that he had to put up with. A plasma officer sat under an umbrella, her large sunglasses protecting her eyes as she watched the tracker with Malachi's stats, vitals and distance on it. He wasn't under any stress tests just yet, but they were taking him out of the lab to see how he acts in public among other things. She wasn't really a fan of being around said fish man, but it was her job. Of course, people that had seen him didn't have the best reaction to him, but he didn't lash out at them. A few incredibly brutal insults were thrown out by him and he had left it at that. It seemed he was eager to get into the water, probably getting away from the stronger sources of beach smells. She left him to do his own thing in the ocean and had parked it. And Malachi was doing his own thing. Not having to come up for air was amazing, there was nothing stopping him from doing his own thing out there... besides running off of course but why would he do that? He signed up for this??? Swimming in the ocean for the first time since his change was different from when he was just fully human. He cut through the water easier, had a better since of direction and could see so much further. And areas that would be considered dark to normal people? He could see through just fine. He could see through it well enough to spot a strange striped board. It made part of him feel somewhat aggressive and wary, but the Malachi part of him knew it was a surfboard... finally a surfer to mess with. With literally no second thought, Malachi moved under the board, put one leg up and kicked the bottom of the board, letting the strength from his kick push him down, eyes locked on the board.

The waters where as stunning as one could get in Anrui, for Nixie it was all she knew and the sights and quiet on the fringe of a huge bustling to-do was rather intoxicating. She rode the smaller surf still prone, it wasn’t a stormy afternoon which made it unlikely she would encounter mountain waves but, catching a little glide here and there was enough. She was angling into position to drop into one of the swells when there was a resounding thud on her board that sent her toppling over the side as the swell picked both her and the board up as it crested and then dumped her back into the ocean to swirl along with the current. She wasn’t in any danger not being close to a shoal, the shallows, or a riptide, and the waves weren’t strong enough to pose their own threat. If anything, it was an annoyance and once she surfaced, she let out a frustrated gasp as she caught her breath and looked for her board. Giving a tug of her ankle and a swell behind her brought the board practically jumping into her head thanks to the lead she had on the board. Not particularly keen on what might have shoved into her board and sharing the same open space at the moment, she hoisted herself onto the board and took a kneeling position as she gripped the side of the board and watched the water.

He stayed underwater, glaring sharply when the person had ever so calmly climbed back onto their board and peered over the edge of it, further ruining any sort of satisfaction he may have gained from any of this. So, bitter and defeated, Malachi slowly rose to the surface, just barely keeping his eyes above water as he shot the lady on the surfboard an angry look. He didn't say any words for a bit, and felt his Carvanha eventually bump against his leg, earning his attention in the form of him lazily swinging a leg at it. He was dealing with something else right now. After a long moment though, he brought his mouth out of the water, contemplating saying something before sinking back to eye level. ... Just.... staring at her.

She knelt there for a moment before she straightened up onto her knees and brushed her blue short hair out of her face as she kept an eye on the waters around her. She didn’t particularly see anything but then deduced she probably startled her oceanic road bump just as much as it had startled her and was probably was nowhere near her location. That is until she caught sight of the water staring back at her. Wait-no-that wasn’t the water staring at her but a person. A rather annoyed person. She stared back rather unphased, riding any of the wake. She watched him rise out of the water some, as if to say something, before he floated back down. She took in the flat lips and greyer than average skin. Not to mention the other little things. If she thought him out of the ordinary or strange, she didn’t show it outwardly and instead raised a brow with a sardonic questioning grin tugging faintly at the corner of her lips when she chose to speak with a pleasant but equally sarcastic tone to the faint grin. “Hello.” And that was it.

Malachi glared even more with the addition of the hello. Turns out, things weren't as chipper as he thought they'd be. This... talking and not insulting strangers thing was a lot harder now that he had been removed from proper socialization for so long in favor for recovering from the agonizing torment that was his transformation. "Hello." He finally spoke back, laying on his back in the water and lightly thumping her board with his foot as his Carvanha swam in circles under the water below him, biting at his shadow for amusement. "Not drinking and surfing, are you?" And he immediately defaults to what he's being taught, frowning deeply at his self and crossing his arms behind his head, he stared at her a moment longer. "Or whatever it is people do anymore." And there, to top it off, a joke so poor that there was no possible way it could be considered one. Wonderful.

Watching his quaintly awkward response set off a spark of intrigue within those cerulean blue eyes, a wide grin cracking her lips. Despite that obvious fact that he was a mutation of some sorts, he wasn’t hard on the eyes. “Not recklessly at any rate.” The word ‘yet’ dangled in the air as teasing bait as she seamlessly absorbed his thump against her board. She mentally ran through a series of questions to prompt further conversation, discarding the obvious and rude. Stating that his depth to safely swim away from shore with potential riptides was pointless because the obvious didn’t need stating. Besides, she wasn’t nearly as interested in the offhand questions of one’s logic for being out in the Anrui coastal waters or to the circumstances of how they came to be there. Relaxing her posture, she ventured forward “Name’s Nixie.” It was an innocent enough invitation, hopefully it didn’t scare him off as if someone dumped chum in shark heavy waters.

Malachi floated there a moment longer, trying to figure out the person that was in front of him. The sunlight was strong, so the glare flickering off the water didn't really do much to help his sight. It'd take some getting used to to not be affected by bright lights. He'd need to look into functioning out of water in bright, sunny days better. This wasn't a lab with annoying LED lights, this was real and outside, dammit. Doing his best not to bite his cheek or ... whatever his tongue was now, he looked over at the woman on the board, squinting at the 'yet' in her sentence but sighing and giving up when she offered her name. It took all of the strength in his body not to blurt out his ID with his name, but he managed. "Eh. Malachi." He gave the name back, easily floating with the water as a small swell washed under them. But he was horribly lacking social graces. "You don't smell as bad as the others... what do you use?" He asked boldly, obviously not really... recognizing you don't ask those kinds of things to strangers. He was trained in his new skills and job requirements! NOT in people skills. Also he kinda wanted to know what she was using and if it was safe for him, cause more often than not, he had a fish smell following him around after a long day in the tank.

Her brow arched wider at his lack of social graces but the genuine, if slightly offhand, compliment had a result he probably hadn’t anticipated. Nixie liked—no—thrived on flattery, even the inadvertent and offhand forms. “Thanks…I use natural hygiene products without synthetics.” She explained casually lowering herself onto her stomach with practiced ease. Her observations leading her to deduce his heightened senses to be attributed to the obvious differences of his person. She had worked with enough sharks to recognize the features anywhere. “Things like coconut oil, aloe vera, vitamin E…” she shrugged slightly trailing a hand through the wake that lapped at the edge of her board with a gentle fondness. “Its not often I meet people who can appreciate a clean scent,” she mused looking at him with a lazy yet slightly pointed expression “personally, everything else smells like people try too hard, a bunch of tools.” She scoffed with a wry grin “anyway…what’s brought your curiosity to my board, handsome?”

He stared at Nixie as she spoke, his face flat, even if he was amused at her calling those perfume wearing meat sacks 'tools'. He stayed relatively flat faced too, still annoyed to an extent that he hadn't startled this surfer more. And as he stared at her, he lowered his self into the water a little more, letting Azubah worm her way onto his lap after trying to ignore her bumping into him to try to get his attention. It was better than being bitten. The grouchy, mean carvanha stopped for just a second to catch a few pets before biting his hand and zooming back off to continue playing with his shadow on the ocean floor below... scratch that being bitten part. He was fine, but he shook his hand as he looked back to Nixie. "I don't know." He answered, in reference to his instinct not wanting anything to do with the poisonous shapes on the board from below. "I just wanted to fuck with surfers and there's really not that many out that I can fuck with cause they all blob together over there on the baby tides." He used his thumb, pointing it over his shoulder in reference to surfers that had a will to live. "I'm bored." He ended, swatting at Azubah as she bumped him once again, shooing the small Carvanha back to the ocean floor. "I can't do much with my glorified baby sitter."
