It's officially summer in Anrui, and the heat is here to prove it! Pokemon are out in droves, all trying to find some relief from the heat. Be careful - they're a little extra testy during heatwaves, and you don't want to get caught between them and some refreshing shade!
Welcome to the Anrui Region, where training is illegal. The Anrui Region is a desolate and lonely place, a once bustling region that has lived under the oppression of Team Plasma for many years. Plasma took over and outlawed training of Pokemon. Raids occurred and people and Pokemon alike were killed. Back alley gym matches were held, but people remain terrified to overthrow Plasma. Who will you side with, Plasma? Or The Resistance?
One of our most welcoming, loyal, and patient of members can be found in Bee - who has been a member for two years now! Always friendly and active in both OOC and IC spaces, Bee is often one of the first people that new members are greeted by and lends a face of familiarity and kindness to any of Anrui's frontiers. With immaculate detail to each masterfully crafted post he writes, as well as the memorable and relatable qualities of his lifelike characters, Bee is a joy to roleplay with and a treasure to Anrui. We're honored to spotlight Bee as our Member of the Month!
As hardened as she is fierce, Nell Stark is a wonderful example of when the extremities of Anrui's political climate are pushed too far on a breakable human mind. Protective of her ideals and morals to the point of defection, watching how Nell is portrayed adapting to the side of the enemy she was once factioned against through her front of snappy indifference is equally parts fascinating and ambiguous. We're happy to announce Nell Stark as our Character of the Month!
In our Thread of the Month oh, life is bigger, Desmond Winters has been in prison for a decade now for murder and procuring, having fully accepted his fate of rotting in the concrete box - that was, until Phoenix Delgado, head researcher of RIVER on the hunt for a new assistant intern, showed up one fateful afternoon. With Desmond's subpar interview skills and Phoenix's cutthroat choosiness, these two collide and find that the traits once considered to be undesirable by others in a professional setting somehow fit together like puzzle pieces.
"Women want me, fish fear me. As loud as it typically was, he had never grown used to the rush of noise - the absolute cacophony - that rushed to his head, every time he would catch small glimpses of ripples and mistakes within the fabricated realm which held him willingly captive. Glitches in the simulation during which the veil would be tattered, fluttering about in the winds of unknown change and what lied behind the wall. Welling inside of him, something was wrong. So entirely, entirely wrong; the same kind of wrong as when he was certain he had left the stove on, or hadn't locked his door. The same wrong that rendered the atmosphere dense and strange, though apparently invisible to his eyes. They had probably forgotten to have her change before being sent out to collect him. Or warn him. Or terrorize him." - Julian Miller, A[D]VERSARY

When he woke up, he couldn't exactly tell what time of day it was, it was dark and... oh, his face was in the ground, and he couldn't breathe! Rolling his head to the side, he took a sharp breath through his nose cause his mouth just wouldn't work. It wouldn't open either, and the more he tried to make sense of things, the less sense they made. It was definitely near nightfall, and there was something over his mouth.
He was surrounded by concrete and there was another person there. From what he could tell, a young girl, but he couldn't move, and when he tried to move his arm, it shot pain through the bicep and into his back. So great, he was stuck and injured. But when he tried moving his feet, he could do that. He was skinny, and was always on the limber side, he could probably work his way out of the ties on his legs.
He just put his self to work on that, doing his best not to jar his arm until he could get a better bearing on what was going on. He couldn't remember what happened, and parts of his face felt swollen. His right eye, his lip and his cheek. Whatever happened had sucked, massively.
While he worked, he did his best to stay quiet, afraid that whatever had beat the shit out of him was probably still around.
TW: I'm gonna tw/cw this with child abduction/human trafficking, just in case. Also, a panic attack! Stay safe y'all![break][break]
Fear. Fear was something that Fawna felt frequently. While never diagnosed via any sort of official testing, she had learned in high school what anxiety disorders were, and was fairly certain that if she were to go to a specialist, she'd be diagnosed with one rather quickly. She was sure that in doing so, she'd be given steps to take and strategies to use in order to help cope with her symptoms, but actually working up the ability just to figure out how to go about taking those first few steps was a task that loomed over her life like a unclimbable mountain. The act of actually doing so - actually finding out if a therapist would be covered in her healthcare, finding one that was a good fit for her, talking about herself - was the very peak, built on top of the foundation of phone call after phone call, scheduling conflicts, and admitting there was something that she needed help with in the first place.[break][break]
It was much easier to self-medicate, use her magic (even though she knew that some of it was just a placebo), and to try to ignore the problem, to tell herself that she's made it this far, why stop now? Fear was a like a shadow to her; it was everywhere she went, seemingly brought on by any and all environments, just like a shadow is caused by any and all light sources. And just as one applies sunscreen to help block out the harmful rays of the sun, Fawna had her own habits to help quell the constant fight or flight impulses that were pumped through her with each powerful beat of her heart.[break][break]
However, she realized as she woke up from what could only be described as a groggy unconsciousness, there was a difference between the anxiety that she felt on a regular basis, and the feeling growing within her with every passing moment. As her eyes fluttered open, she realized quickly that she didn't know where she was, and immediately her pulse began to spike. She made an attempt to push herself off of the ground, however her wrists were tied behind her, forcing her to do so with the strength of her upper body alone. She grunted as she pushed, realizing quickly that her mouth had been taped shut. The use of her muscles brought about a sharp pain in her abdomen, as well as a dull ache around her neck - she was definitely bruised in both places, and her in general her muscles were sore from...[break][break]
She couldn't remember. How did she get here? Why was she here? Where was here? Gazing up, she spotted a window high out of reach - it seemed as though it was still light outside, but certainly not bright. It was either very early, or starting to get late. It was too high and too small to see anything clearly out of, but she thought she saw some green, so she didn't think she was in Hyo anymore. [break][break]
So she was tied up and gagged, in an unfamiliar space, somewhere outside of Hyo City. She was fairly certain she had been in Hyo City most recently - she couldn't remember leaving after her return from guarding Lesca. [break][break]
She can't move. She can't move. She didn't know what to do, and her mind was going blank. She can't move. She can't move. Where was she? Can't move. Can't move. What should she do? Can't move. Fear. Shaking. Tears. Crying. Can't move.
pokemon team will be determined when she finds them.[break] I'll save the first post level until then!

Enzo had spent an uncomfortable amount of time squirming his way free from the ties around his ankles, and could already feel said ankles going raw from the friction against the rope. He had to do his best to stay calm, all the shit he had been through already, up to this point, now would be a really bad time to start panicking.
As he spit against his own gag, licking and breathing against it the best he could until it finally peeled off, he watched the other person begin to move, just a bit. Not much. They were shaking so they were either having a seizure, or they were awake and scared. Either way, he was able to worm his way into a sitting position once he had determined that there was no one in the immediate area... at least anyone making any sort of noise, and that let him get a slightly better look at the person trapped with him.
He tapped his foot a couple of times to see if he could get a reaction without speaking up first. He would also try to squirm out of the binds holding his arms together behind his back, but he was pretty sure that one of his arms was at least fractured, so there would be absolutely none of that.
Fawna knew, deep down in her subconscious, that she needed to get it together. She needed to calm down if she was going to get herself out of whatever mess this was. Regular bouts of paranoia as a teen had caused her to read books and articles on this sort of thing - how to weasel your way out of ropes, how to burn zipties with friction, what to do if a stranger walks up and attacks you - so the knowledge was there, but it was buried deep behind her primal urge to panic. Her flight or fight instincts had chosen the flight, but had yet switched over to the fight despite being unable to flee. The blood was rushing to her ears, and she could clearly hear her own heart beating, like an awry metronome set to steadily increase its tempo, reminding her second after second that she was in danger.[break][break]
She would never have thought that anything could be louder than the beating of her heart and her heaving for air through her nostrils, but three taps behind her managed to catch her attention. She froze, every hair on her body standing on end as she envisioned who or what was behind her. Her breathing stopped, but only for a moment as it reset itself into a quiet, slower pattern, her brain forcing her respiratory system to prepare her muscles for fleeing. She could feel a spike of adrenaline rushing through her body as she took a moment to mentally prepare herself for whatever it was she was about to see.[break][break]
She whipped her torso around, her muscles immediately reminding her of the pain that they had felt when she had initially sat up. A boy, looking to be about her age, was sitting near the other wall, in what seemed to be a similar situation to what she was in. Her gaze widened - there was another person trapped here with her?[break][break]
Her brain began to calculate, settling into a steadier and clearer rhythm. They would need to work together, which meant they would need to be able to communicate, but quietly. That's right - she had read about how to get duct tape off of your mouth. Opening her lips as best as she could, she began to gather spit and lick at it. It tasted horrible, but that was the least of her concerns as she began to scooch her way closer to the other boy.

Enzo was lucky his mind prioritized fight over flight, it was clear that this person was panicking, but at least they were able to come back down to earth long enough to realize that there was someone else here, and that someone had already freed their legs and mouth. He could probably work on the binds on her hands if she stayed still enough for him. His arm would burn and scream with him moving his hands like that, but it'd get them unstuck and would give the girl her hands back. That should also help with the panicking.
As quietly as humanly possible, he moved to meet her half way, turned his back to her and pointed at his own binds behind his back, then to her, turning his head to try to mouth some sort of instruction to her to put her binds to his own hands so he can get her free. He never stopped listening though, and it felt like there was a pint of blood behind every ear. The stressful silence was deafening.
While he waited for something to touch his hands, he simply looked around the top of where they were stuck, still trying to see if he couldn't hear anybody. Maybe they got lucky and woke up during a break or shift change. Or maybe they woke up earlier than expected so they're all somewhere else.
Reminder that there is an abduction TW in this thread, in case anyone is viewing it in recent posts![break][break]
Fawna had this stranger to thank for bringing back her sense of self control. Feelings of panic still lingered thoughout her body. Adrenaline was coursing through each of her veins, bring with it a tingling sensation that spread to every inch of flesh as her muscles prepared themselves for action. Her breathing was still heavy, her lungs craving the extra oxygen needed to fuel her escape. Admittedly, her mind was still a bit foggy from the initial panic, but the fact that someone else was in this horrifying situation with her at the very least forced her to think before acting. [break][break]
Her siblings had made fun of her on the occasion that they discovered she had been researching what to do in the event that she would be captured. They had scoffed at her, told her she was being too paranoid. Nothing would ever happen to her, they had said. Their judgements had been what stopped her from finding any souces for real, in-person training, but she had at least studied it by book and web. [break][break]
Her companion began to inch towards her as well. Stopping her own progression, she pulled herself onto her knees and arched her back, allowing her hands to fall below her bum. Then, bending her legs so that her hands were squished uncomfortably between her thighs and feet, she rolled backwards onto her back, tucking her legs as close to her chest. She needed to wiggle her arms a bit to force them out from under her back, and her wrists were joining her side and neck in immense pain as the rope dug into her skin, but at this angle she was able to pull her arms around her legs and feet, effectively bringing her hands in front of her. [break][break]
Thankfully, that move she had practiced, as it had been one she could do by herself in the privacy of her own room. [break][break]
She saw the other person look at her as he pointed with a finger at his own rope. He was mouthing something to her, but her own brainfog caused her to misinterpret what he was telling her to do, believing that he wanted her to free him. Like hell was she going to untie his hands before her own. [break][break]
Her first priority was her feet. Unfortunately, she had been unconscious when they had bound her, so she hadn't had the opportunity to position herself in a way that might give her some slack to work with in the present. Whoever had tied her up had done so tightly, as evidenced by the aching she still felt in her wrists from the rope squeezing her as she had brought her hands to the front. Not only that, but they had put the ankle knot behind her ankles, so while she could reach it with her fingers, she certainly couldn't with her teeth. [break][break]
Alright then. In order to free her feet, she'd need to free her wrists first, which meant freeing her teeth. Reaching her fingers up to grab a corner of the tape, she set to work licking her lips again as she gently tugged at the tape.

Enzo just waited, he would have untied her hands for her, but he'd stay patient for now. Most of his will power kept drawing back towards keeping his brain off of the splitting pain that was his forearms. Taking several deep breaths, he watched Fawna for a moment before looking around the area they were trapped in.
He could feel bruises practically forming from the damage and he had to blink rapidly a few times and squeeze his eyes afterwards to ward off the creeping pains, he was stuck like that for now, but at least he could breathe better. There were a few noises out and about, but it sounded like any potential people were napping or just fucking around away from them. Either way, there wasn't enough noise just yet to drown out whispering.
Time still ticked on though, and pokemon would start speaking up. Soon, the forest would be alive with numerous Pokemon calls, the perfect opportunity to do something. Besides, wild Pokemon probably wouldn't take kindly to what was going on here, meaning they may be running short on time.
Deciding he'd rather do something else to keep his focus off of his arms, he moved slowly and deliberately, bringing his self to a crouched position, a knee on the ground. He was ready to stand but... he didn't want to lose balance. So he waited and got his grip on being on his feet- er, knees again.
