XIULAN XIA.
THE EFFICIENCY POKEMON
AGE | GENDER | ALLEGIANCE | OCCUPATION |
FORTY THREE. | FEMALE. | PLASMA. | POLITICIAN. |
APPEARANCE
Standing nearly six feet tall, Xia is an intimidating woman- especially given her near-constant stern expression. Her long limbs belie the fact that she's a good bit overweight, weight which she tends to carry on her thighs, but there's a sprinkling of it everywhere, so she at least seems balanced. It's easy to tell she's never had problems finding food in her life, and easy to extrapolate from there she's grown up in relative luxury.
Her style of dress, too, is typically modest, with long sleeves and floor length dresses- but she does that moreso for professionalism than anything. She owns a great many outfits, and is not opposed to dressing ever further up for fancy events, or showing skin if need be. What she considers "formal" is usually exemplified in her hairstyle more than anything, as she prefers to have it down, but will occasionally put it up in braids or a bun if she's doing anything exciting. When training or hiking, however, she often pulls the golden mass back in just a simple ponytail, merely to keep it out of her face.
She doesn't typically get body hair, what is there being thin and light. But that's not to say she is free of distinctive markings- while it's usually covered by hair or a high collar, Xia has a tattoo of the character for 4 (四) on the nape of her neck. Supposedly this is for the purpose of body identification in case she dies.
When she is working, she will make at least a vague gesture in the direction of wearing makeup. Usually this consists of lipstick, foundation, and possibly eyeliner, and that's about it. Outside of work however, she rarely bothers. Covering her face doesn't mean much to her, as she somewhat resents the fact that looking good is what got her to where she is in life.

PERSONALITY
POSITIVE - ANALYTICAL - EFFICIENT - DEDICATED - LEVEL-HEADED - IDEALISTIC NEGATIVE - DISTANT - CALCULATING - DISTRUSTING - COLD - UNSENTIMENTAL | She does not like wasting time, regardless of if it's on the past or emotions. In this sense, you could easily call her a workaholic. Her job requires her to make sacrifices, a fact she is intimately familiar with. The truth is, she wouldn't be working it if it weren't all just the equivalent of a game to her. Both her job, and her own life. If she dies alone and having accomplished nothing, what is the difference between that and losing? No- she'd rather work herself to death trying to change the way things are than ever just disappear into the night in luxury. Of course she's aware the nation is in utter turmoil, and of course she knows that Plasma is responsible for the brunt of it. She never signed up to agree with everything they said- but the unfortunate truth is, there's no way to even get a foot in the door without capitulating to their demands. In name she may be on their side, but the truth is, she works for herself before any of them. Changing the world with tax reform isn't glamorous, but someone needs to be there to pick up the charred remains once the world burns down. She didn't spend those countless nights poring over page after page of law because it was fun. She did it because she felt like there was some kind of value in it. So she's chosen to look towards the future instead of dwelling on the past and what has already been done. She's chosen to keep people and feelings an arm's length away, afraid of growing too attached to things she may one day need to sacrifice in service of her goals. She's chosen to put her trust in none but herself, knowing that she is the only arbiter of her own fate. But so too has she chosen not to waste her life hating the power structure without doing anything. By her hands, she'll happily dismantle it from within. How better to win a game of life? |
BACKGROUND
Born to an upper-middle class family in Johto, her background would best be defined as "traditional." Despite being intelligent even as a child, she wasn't exactly given many freedoms or encouraged to challenge herself. Rather, she was encouraged to be ladylike, and not get too involved in the specifics- taking care of the house, and the pets as she did.
She was shipped off to Anrui in her early twenties to find a husband, around the time Plasma was beginning to take control of the government- and she was soon married to an upstart Representative from the party who was about 10 years older than her. He was wealthy- wealthier even than her family back home, and provided her with a window into upward social mobility. Their marriage was quick, and loveless- initially meant as nothing more than a play at power from her and at children from him.
Unfortunate for him, as even with nearly 15 years of trying, children never happened.
Not like she was completely aware she was infertile beforehand, but neither was she ever one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
They settled down in a more permanent home in Eve after the massacre and total takeover when most Plasma facilities moved there, for ease of travel. Their permanent residence allowed Xia to do what she had initially wanted out of the relationship- the ability to snoop into her husband's financial records. From a man like him, it was hardly a secret he was taking bribes, at least to his wife- she had been aware of their odd spikes in income, but only once she looked into it did she truly realize the depth of his corruption.
Of course, he was merely a symptom of the illness plaguing the country.
But wouldn't it be nice to get some relief for those symptoms?
Officially, her former husband was killed in the bombing of St. Jasper's Ball, but not all things add up there. Why she did not attend herself, for example? Why was his body thoroughly mangled, to the point his cause of death was almost impossible to determine beyond "fuck dude, he 'sploded real good"?
Why was she so quick and happy to bury his corpse and his last name along with it, going back to her maiden one- and fill his representative seat instead?
There have always been theories, theories which she gives little more than a laugh.
In the meantime, she has proven frightfully competent at keeping up her former husband's job in his place- competent enough to be "reelected" on her own merits by now. (Is it truly election, if it's mostly chosen by the internal members of the party?) No one incorrectly refers to her by her married name, instead pausing to look up at her and give her a proper "Miss Xia," when they address her. She's even been entrusted with the vague power of "you can have pokemon, i suppose," which she considers a bit naive. After all, this only gives her more power. Things have simply calmed down enough she's far from the higher ups' biggest concern, she supposes.
She doesn't bother keeping up her former husband's specific under the table dealings. Corruption is corruption, well meaning or not, and she is the only one she can trust in this hellscape of a region. So many times she had considered running back to Johto, but now, her cards are all on the table. There's no way to walk away- and no way to cheat the system, with the sniper's reticle still trained on her head for seeming a bit too close to terrorist activity. That's how politics is, of course- an ouroboros of corrupt power, every single party always willing to eat itself from within.
But she's used to it. If she has no choice to play, all she needs to do is exploit the rules there already are.
