KALLUK NIPAITCHUK.
THE FAMILY POKEMON
AGE | GENDER | ALLEGIANCE | OCCUPATION |
TWENTY FOUR | FEMALE | NEUTRAL | NOMAD |
APPEARANCE
Kalluk's most notable feature is her hair. Its stark white in color, and thick, cut in uneven layers with sections here and there braided, or pulled together with a band. She lets it flow, cascading down past her shoulders. Her skin in dark, and she decorates it with contrasting bright blue paint that draws out the blue in her eyes.
She has an angular frame. Although she has a some slight curves, for the most part she is rather thin, maybe even a little bony if it weren't for the small amount of muscle that her life as a nomad has brought her. While living in her Tribe in Sinnoh, she often wore anoraks, boots, and thick, fur-lined clothing. Once they began to travel and were out on the sea quite often, she began wearing more sunscreen than clothing. Now that she is mostly landlocked, however, she's found a sort of happy medium of both, although she prefers the dresscode that she used on the sea.
In her opinion, the most important and notable part of Kalluk's body is her face, and even more specifically her eyes. When communicating with someone who does not speak - or rather, sign - her language, body language becomes imperative. Thus, her expressions are often more dynamic than the average person's, and she prides herself on her ability to read the body language of others.

PERSONALITY
POSITIVE - Intelligent - Flexible - Proud - Adventurous - Responsible NEGATIVE - Quiet - Aloof - Stubborn - Naive - Reserved | Kalluk holds an incredible amount of pride in everything she does, and everything she is. That is not to say that she is cocky. She does not think of herself above others, or that she stronger or smarter. However, she has pride in who she is, where she has come from, and who she surrounds herself with. At first, Kalluk will be straightforward and serious, however not the least bit unfriendly. In fact, her friendliness is the the first inkling of her inner personality that most people see. She will happily stop to help a stranger in need, or take time to coach a young trainer who she has beaten in battle. If you begin to get to know her, you will find that she has an adventurous spirit that has simply matured throughout her short life so far. She loves to learn, both from book studies as well as from real life, always having found it more of a privilege than a burden. Although naive to a lot of the more serious aspects of the world, she watches the actions of those around her and learns quickly not only by doing, but also by example. Acquaintances are easy for Kalluk to come by. Friends are not so easy, only because 'friend' and 'acquaintance' are much the same to Kalluk. She does not value friendship - she values family. The task will not be to become her friend, as she looks at most people as potential friends. Instead, the task will be to become so close to her that she considers you to be sibling level. Most people tend to remember Kalluk fairly well, with her stark white hair and her unique way of communicating. In order for you to make an impression on her, you must be consistent and repeatedly proven to be trustworthy. She has had a bit of a hard time trusting as she's grown, but the ability is there. You must work to become what she truly considers to be family. |
BACKGROUND
Her family, silence, and water. These three abstracts have been the only things constant in Kalluk's life.
In her little tribe that sits just north of Snowpoint City, Sinnoh, it has always been rumored that Kalluk's paternal family was blessed by Kyurem many ages ago, giving them their thick, white hair. Kalluk doesn't know if the rumor is true, but even if it was, it would not make her love her father.
Kalluk was born four years after her older brother. Her mother credits him with the discovery that Kalluk was born profoundly deaf. One afternoon he was making quite a bit of noise, as toddlers are prone to do, and their mother commanded that he be quiet so that he didn't wake Kalluk during her nap, to which he snarkily replied that it didn't matter - she couldn't hear anyway. They aren't sure if this was an actual observation or just something that a toddler came up with to stay out of trouble, but after some small testing and a trip to the doctor in Snowpoint, it was confirmed that Kalluk was indeed profoundly deaf. The doctors suggested technology that could possibly allow Kalluk some form of hearing, however her mother decided that it was a decision that she would allow Kalluk to make when she was older.
Their mother did not worry, nor did she waste time. Almost immediately, she sought out the hunters of their tribe who used Sinnoh Sign Language (SSL) to communicate while hunting; after all, in such a cold landscape, it was useful to be able to communicate without uncovering the bottom portion of your face, and silent communication allowed them to sneak up on their prey. As you would expect from such a close knit community, the hunters happily agreed to teach Kalluk's mother SSL in exchange for some of her homemade fish stew. Despite being just a baby, she brought Kalluk as well as Kalluk's brother with her so that they could learn together. Her father did not attend.
SSL was not the only thing that Kalluk inherited from the hunters. These hunters were her role models, and she aspired to be just as strong of a pokemon trainer as they were. They were skilled battlers and pokemon handlers, often bringing their pokemon with them while hunting. One day Kalluk happened upon a young lapras and her mother, who was deceased and half buried in ice. It appeared that the mother was missing her flippers, as well as portions of her shell - all signs pointing to poachers. Kalluk managed to dig the mother out of the snow and ice, releasing her body to the ocean. The shiny infant lapras has been with her ever since.
Kalluk did not struggle in school. She positively adored reading as well as writing, and although she sometimes missed some of the information, her teachers as well as her friends were able to help her fill in the gaps in her notes. Her favorite thing to read about were pokemon and the vast differences between the all of the species. After her homework and her chores were done, she spent her evenings with the hunters learning SSL, and playing with the Tribe Chief's lycanroc.
She was seven when her father left. Although she could tell her parents didn't always get along, she had never realized that there was a risk of her father leaving them. She obviously couldn't hear their final argument - the straw that broke the numel's back - but several years later her brother told her that her father claimed children were not a good enough reason to stay married, and that their mother could not force him to stay. It absolutely broke her mother's heart, and Kalluk would never forget the image of her mother mourning her failed marriage.
Her mother tried her best to remain strong and carry on, despite his constant presence in their tribe. Eventually, it became too difficult, and for the first time in her life, the woman who gave everything to her family had to make a decision that would only benefit herself. Before they left, they stopped to say goodbye to the Tribe's hunters, and they gifted Kalluk with a rockruff egg to take with her on her travels.
One year worth of traveling later, Kalluk, her mother, and her brother arrived on the southeast end of Sinnoh, in Sunyshore City. Kalluk's experiences in Sunyshore would be the first of many occasions when she was underestimated simply because she could not hear. Although there were those who could use SSL, they were not the friendly bunch that they had left at home. Her teachers were less patient, and she had more difficulty making friends.
Unable to sit by and watch how the Sunyfolk treated them, but also unable to return back home to their tribe, Kalluk's mother came up with a new plan. 'We will go to Pastoria City!' she proclaimed. 'We will find the the people of the Marsh, and we will join them!'
The trio lasted less than a year in Pastoria City. Their lifestyle was simply too... different.
Since then, the small family managed to find relative happiness by traveling to various regions, never staying in one place for long. Often, they would catch a variety of fish on their way from one region to the next, and then sell it in markets, along with her mother's famous fish stew.
It was only recently that Kalluk and her family heard about the island of Anrui. Although it seemed like a paradise, there was a looming darkness brought on by the rumor of pokemon training being made illegal. It didn't take long for Kalluk to convince her mother to take them to Anrui to see for themselves. Getting their pokemon into the region was simple - all it took was a water-proof box fastened to her lapras' shell, a map, and some patience.
