It wasn't until today that Kaida had even considered that the reason Antoinette might execute her on the spot was because she was late. The young trainer's feet pounded on the sidewalk below, nimbly avoiding any unforeseen cracks or shifts in height in the weathered cement. She could hear the Dragon Masters' words echoing in her head, repeating time and time again proverbs about the consequences of being late, as though simple words would have any effect on the hard-headed girl.
"He who is in a hurry always arrives late."
Why was she like this? Why couldn't she allow herself to leave on time? To not be in a rush? She had had all morning to prepare for this meeting, but the overwhelming anxiety that typically precedes a surprise meeting with Antoinette had loomed over her to the point that she was lucky enough just to be able to shower and gulp down some grapefruit before shoving her supplies into her bag and rushing out the door.
Reaching up as she ran, she first reached for her hearing aids, turning a small knob in order to silence the sound of air rushing past her ears. She then took hold of the loose straps of her bag and pulled it against her. Inside, a few eggs were nestled in the blankets that she used to help Toto and Kiki with transporting her via their Fly attack. She could feel her bag beating against her back with each step, and tugging on the straps seemed to help keep the bag a little more steady so as not to crack any of the eggs. She just hoped that the damage hadn't already been done.
"He who arrives too late finds the plate turned over."
The proverbs in her head were beginning to be drowned out by the gasping of her breath and the rhythmic beating of her feet on the sidewalk. Luckily, she hadn't been far from Plasma HQ. She had been staying temporarily in Eve City during the Chewy patrols, and hadn't gone back to her apartment in Kain City yet. She didn't have time to admire the trees that bristled the rooftops, or the flying type pokemon who soared above her. She could only focus on one thing - getting to Antoinette on time.
She didn't slow down in an effort to smooth her entrance into the building. Instead, she nearly collided headfirst into the glass doors before quickly swiping her badge on the electronic keypad and yanking the unlocked doors open. Like a tornado, she whipped into the lobby and to the desk, where she was met with a nod from the secretary followed by the sound of the stairwell doors clicking open.
"The miltank that arrives late will have to drink muddy water and eat dry grass."
Kaida stole a glance at the clock before racing through the doors - she had exactly two minutes to make it upstairs in order to be on time, a feat she could easily do in 45 seconds. So as soon as she made it to the stairs, she allowed herself to walk up them at a normal pace, focusing on breathing deeply in through her nose, and out through her mouth. There was no chance of her calming her pounding heart in the presence of Antoinette, but she could at least make it seem as though she hadn't just sprinted to the building. Taking one more breath, she knocked on the door, hesitated for only a second, and then let herself into the office.JULIAN MILLER
