Sleeping At Last
|He didn't know how it happened, and he certainly wasn't complaining. |
He was trying to be careful now, pulling the hood of his jacket forward as a couple passed by. He didn't want the attention of the Resistance, especially if Ashton was out looking for him again. And, if his face was seen, he was worried that if Plasma saw him and recognized who he was, they would take him straight to Antoinette considering he'd been caught and that was the word on the street. It made it worse that his capture had been his brother, feeling that second chance with Plasma slipping from his hands.
So now he was just floating around, not really sitting down anywhere in fear that he would be ambushed again by either parties and he wasn't sure he could go through all that nonsense again. And yet, this place was almost like a ghost town, his fears of being caught starting to ebb away slowly.
Rain had started pattering down from the sky, soaking his coat with large drops of water. While he didn't care that much about it, the shiny eevee that had found shelter within his hood (clinging to his trapezium) had begun shrinking back slightly. He was still learning more and more about Cider, her dust grey fur fluffing up and brushing against his neck. He'd noticed that when she did something like this, she didn't particularly like something she was focusing on. This one appeared to be rain. He reached out a hand to scratch behind her ear, his hand wet. When she realized this, she pawed his hand away.
"Alright, alright." He said, dropping his hand and looking around. "I'll find us some shelter."
What town was he in again?
He found an overhanging with a bench underneath. He stepped under it, even though rain was pouring from the one end of it, a hole in the roof. The quietness of the town, the run down overhang area, the saloon he had passed earlier. He had to assume he was in Kairo Town. Rolling the bag that he'd left the Resistance base with from his shoulder and onto the bench in front of him gently, he unzipped it to look at the golden charmander egg inside it. Whoever had let him go either messed up or intentionally left the egg and Cider's own Pokeball in the pack.
He touched the egg for a moment, feeling to make sure that it was still warm. If he remembered correctly, for a charmander, this was a good thing. A sign that the burning flame on their tail had been burning strong inside the egg as the Pokemon itself grew.
Cider jumped from her place and walked around the bag, coming up on the other side to prop herself up and peer in on the Pokemon egg inside. She tilted her head, looking up at Riley, who tried to explain to her what he was doing. "Eventually, it's going to hatch. Just like you did once. And Fluffy, and Star." He patted her gently, pulling her into his lap as he took her spot on the bench. "When it hatches, help me name it, yeah?" Cider purred, rubbing up against his jacket and curling up into a ball to sleep.
He had decided to lay back and pull out a cigarette, lighting it and taking a long drag on it. His head tilted backwards, his eyes closed as he tried to calm down and relax. The last few weeks had been stressful for him, not knowing whether he was going to leave that damned room. Sure, it was a decent room and his brother made sure he had every comfort, but it was still a cage. There were bars and locks that kept him from leaving freely and he hated it, he absolutely hated having been there. And then, the last few days, had been even more stressful. He was broke, had no where to go (sure, there was Erich, but he was pretty sure that bridge had been burned and at this point, it was just better to stay away and let things be for him), and he didn't like staying in the same spot for long when the thought of being caught again freaked him out.
He took another hit of his cigarette, the paper crackling softly as he did so. His hood had fallen back slightly, the fabric attempting to hold onto his hair. At least Lukas wasn't around to see the way things were now. The Resistance had turned into a shit show, or maybe it had always been that way ...
He was slowly trying to get over it, but when it was all you thought about for years in a cell, it was hard to think of anything else. And while he missed him, he couldn't help feeling that he needed to start letting go of him - move on even. His thumb gently turned the ring on his finger, something he did when he started thinking about the past. He'd always have parts of Lukas with him, so long as he had his ring and pendant.
Cider, who'd been working on passing out, suddenly pricked her ears up and looked in the direction of a noise.
