Sleeping At Last
|He was nervous.|
More than nervous, he thought. He felt more sick to his stomach than anything. He was walking down the street, the house he once live in within his sight. The closer he got to it, the smaller his steps became. Raijin looked at him with concern, giving his trainer a low chuff of comfort. Alex's arms tightened around the yellow egg he'd been carrying since Hyo City, told that when it hatched, the old lady would take it back and he would get a reward of some kind (and to which he assumed that meant he would take it back to her and she would give him a small sum of money). But, he had suddenly stopped walking for a moment, his heart hammering in his chest like an animal that was caged and trying to break free.
Could he do this? Could he really walk back in to Emerson's life again after half a year without being there?
Raijin pulled on the hem of Alex's sweater gently, noticing his trainer's expression and attempted to move him forward. Startled, Alex started forward again but just as slow as before. His mind was racing with the questions he'd thought of in Hyo, about whether Emerson had moved on or if he was angry with him. The idea that he may not care about him anymore.
He took a deep breath, holding it for a moment, and then let it out again. His walking grew a little more steady, reaching the gate that lead to the stairs and up to the house. He wasn't able to walk up it yet, for a moment just sitting and stared at the door ahead of him, biting his lip and hoping to see a shadow in the windows.
Was Emerson even home? Did he even live here anymore? He supposed he could always sit on the step and wait to see what happened if no one answered.
He carefully placed the egg into his bag, just in case something happened and he would need to react appropriately. It poked out at the top but at least it would be dropped from his hands and was safely strapped to his side. But what would happen exactly? There was no way for him to properly think of an outcome other than the ones that seemed too normal and too cheesy. He knew Emerson wasn't going to hurt him, or at least he never seemed like the type to do something harmful to Alex. Still, he felt uneasy. He knew he had been wrong not to call in the first place, not to explain. Even ignoring Emerson's phone calls during those first days after his mother's funeral would have given even Alex a bad feeling that maybe the other end didn't care. But that wasn't true, Alex did care, he just ... he didn't know how to express it without destroying things around him.
His breath hitched, a nervous exhale following, as the thought festered in his mind. ”What if ... What if I ruined everything? Everything good between us?”
Raijin glanced at him with worry, rubbing his head against Alex's elbow until the boy lowered down his hand to scratch him gingerly behind the ear unconsciously. A purr emitted from the luxray's throat, causing Alex to smile softly in a moment of relaxation. When he stopped, the nervousness came back, but less than it had been moments before. He tried pushing the remains away stubbornly, attempting to remove any ounce of fear he had but in the end, what was he supposed to do? What should he say?
”I know I ignored your calls and pretty much dropped off the face of the earth without so much as a word, but hey! Let’s forget it all happened and be together again anyways?!”
Somehow, that didn’t seem any better to him, it seemed more toxic than anything to just ignore it all rather than explaining to him. And even then, did he really want to explain it to him?
He glanced at the thick, leather bracelet on his wrist where a scar hid underneath. He could feel Raijin next to him seeing through the material and then glancing back up at him. Alex shifted uneasily, tearing his eyes away to look to his right, biting at his bottom lip again. He felt as if a chill had gone through him and no matter how many sweaters he threw on, he would never be able to get rid of the cold. With a deep breath, he moved forward, determination set on his face.
The sooner he got this over with, the sooner that they could both move on. His heart dropped slightly at that. He changed the idea quickly: the sooner they could both move past this. He took the steps as quickly as he could, swallowing hard and reaching out a trembling hand to knock on the door.
