RILEY SHAE ARRINGTON.
THE BROKEN POKEMON
- Always appearing as if nothing truly bothers him, Riley almost always wears the same face. His facial features are rarely ever something else, even dealing with children gives you dull eyes and a straight mouth. His face is sharp, with a hard jaw line and a narrow nose, and a thin neck to hold it all up. His skin tone is a light caramel color typically, often finding himself a tan, but when he hasn’t been in the sun for some time, his skin becomes slightly paler. Though outer appearance may have him looking flawless, he isn't. Rarely does he ever take his shirt off, underneath the story of his past. Deep scars line his back, the entire surface covered. Removing his shirt would mean someone seeing those scars and seeing those scars may trigger someone to ask how he came about them, so he doesn't. Around his wrist are much lighter scars, easy to cover up and blend in with a tan, caused from being chained for years.
A bronze mess and rarely ever brushed, Riley's hair does whatever it wants. He does brush it and styles it but the styling is without order and he just shrugs at how it looks. Cutting off at the nape of his neck, there are several different colored strands, ranging between the palest blond to the richest brown. His eyes are a good match with his hair, hazel in a mixture of pooled amber gold and flecks of leaf green. For most, they've been the most captivating thing about him.
His body is made of muscle, though he isn't buff (it isn't the style he likes on him). He weighs 126 pounds specifically – not counting fluctuation – and is 5’9” in height. However, his clothes are baggy and typically don’t fit well, save for his jeans. He doesn’t like the style of decorated clothing, usually wearing just plain colored shirts or those with patterns. Over top of that is almost always a denim jacket, lined at the collar with Mareep wool. Going down is typically a pair of well fit jeans in either black or blue, covering up a narrow pair of leather boots. He isn't much of a man for jewelry, but he does own two pieces that he refuses to ever take off. One is a ring on his left hand, a simple silver band with an engraving etched on the inside. Many believe him to be married and often tease him for it. Around his neck, on a thin onyx colored chain, is a necklace with a square pendant of silver on it, engraved on the back. Both pieces say With All My Heart in fine etching, gifts from someone now lost to him.
- HARD WORKING
- CLOSED OFF
|Trusting has always been the best quality of Riley. For him, if you can find trust within him, you’ve found a life long ally. He takes information about every situation seriously and can even take them to the grave if need be. He doesn’t tattle or stab those who trust him in the back. Information can be dangerous, and he knows better than to share it, the near definition of a perfect friend. He is also extremely determined, setting out to do tasks that have to be completed before he moves onto the next, no matter what that task may be.|
Despite the things he may have done in the past, Riley has a good soul. It is far from pure and may have a little dirt on it, but underneath it all he tends to do what is right above what he is ordered to do. He is caring and loving to his Pokemon, never once has he been cruel to them and when he thinks of the ones before them, it's not without some form of guilt. When it comes down to relationships, he rarely falls in love but when he does, he falls hard into it. He is responsible for his actions of course, rarely lying but typically with a twist on the actual truth. Still, it is easier for him to allow the blame to fall on his shoulders, rather than see someone else suffer in the same way that he has. He has a tendency to cover for people, so if you need something serious, he's definitely your guy.
You don’t have to get close to him or have him open up to you to learn that he is a hard worker. Like anyone else, he does have his own goals and dreams that he works towards, not that he would tell anyone about them. He doesn’t do a half-assed job with anything since he’s most likely get thrown into jail if he did. Regardless of all that, he does want to reach the higher ranks of Plasma so that he can get things exactly the way he wants them: peaceful and quite. Maybe a little bit of safety thrown into the mix as well. With this being said, he is an extremely closed off individual, rarely allowing for anyone to come too close to him. If you are able to crack through that thick shell of his, it is due to him becoming weak momentarily. He tends to keep to himself, not wanting his actions to cause further harm upon anyone else.
It may not be so hard to believe after saying this that Riley does not play well with others. He can become easy to anger if the wrong thing is said or done, and he has a habit of smarting off if you speak to him the wrong way or bring light to something unpleasant. In all truth, he would sooner bury a knife in your chest than to hear what you have to say (if he still had those knives). He is entirely rash with his actions, becoming angered enough causes him to act more on emotions than thought. He doesn’t stop to think of the consequences of these things and will get far ahead of himself, rushing head first and blindly into a situation.
He's never been a social butterfly, rarely jumping into groups or speaking first in a conversation. He hates having to get to know someone and even more so if that person forces themselves into his life. Situations can become strained and awkward for him as well, since he doesn’t fully know how to deal with his own issues, let alone the issues of others. Guilt is a huge weakness for him and if something were to happen to anyone who did speak to him, he would believe it to be his fault. He's caused death and heart ache before to those close to him, such as Lukas's death (hat could be the most guilt that he will ever feel, keeping him up at night with nightmares), for being a pain in Zeus' was for a brief while, and even for up and leaving Erich without saying so much as a good-bye.
- Riley was born to an almost normal family, under almost normal circumstances. Both his mother and father worked as scientist for Team Plasma. His mother had always wanted a girl and neither of them minded the idea of having children till they did. So, when their son was born, they gave him a feminine middle name, Ashton Madison Arrington. Though they tried often to conceive, it took them a few years before Ashton came about and another five years before Riley was born as well, his mother giving him the middle name of Shae. After Riley, his parents had decided to keep up the tradition of middle names with their children. It was about three years later that they had their girl, Stella Jackson Arrington.
They lived in a large home at the heart of Kairo City, Riley and his siblings never needing to want for anything. His brother was always the protective type and looked after them whenever their parents went to work. He was like a part-time parent to them and he never once complained. At some point, Riley began looking up to his older brother and wanted to be just like him. So, when Ashton hit fourteen and started having a strained relationship with his parents, Riley began to notice the changes in his brother. Riley was nine at the time and slowly he began to resent his brother as Ashton showed up home less frequently or holed himself up in his room. Two years later, Ashton left to join the Resistance and Riley didn’t see him again for many years.
His mother had been wrecked with grief for a while, but eventually she found peace with it. Her child was doing what he thought was right. His father seemed disappointed but shared his wife's views. Stella was partial, too young to honestly understand and too distressed because she was missing a key figure in her life. Riley, however, became hostile whenever his brother became a topic. He had grown to resent him and decided quickly that he would join Plasma one day so that he could show his brother just what was right. It was a fleeting idea for a child like Riley and flew out the window the night that his parents were killed. He was twelve when officers came to their door and escorted them into family services. Due to Ashton’s alliances, he was not contacted, and both Riley and Stella were separated from each other. Even now, Riley does not know where it was she went.
Riley was thrown back and forth between foster homes for about a year. He became wild with those who ‘tried’, rebelling against most rules set in place. The shortest time he had spent in foster care was a week and most of that time was due to the weekend. The only foster parent that ever understood him became like a father to him, teaching him everything he knew to this day.
They were extremely close – him and Roman, his mentor – with Roman showing him how to fight, survive in the wild, and properly use throwing knives. For Riley’s fourteenth birthday, he was given a set of throwing knives with a matching holster, along with a team of Pokemon: eventually Garchomp, Pidgeot, Porygon-Z, Sharpedo, Metagross, and Froslass. This was the only team he was ever meant to own, learning how to fight with and around them for when he became old enough to join Team Plasma. He taught Riley more than just fighting as well, such as how to perceive the world and how to prepare for the future. Once he turned seventeen, Riley became an official member of Team Plasma. Most of his assignments were done with Roman, becoming his partner in work and overseeing the rest of his teaching. Yet, it was all short lives when the man was killed a few months later by a surprise attack from the Resistance while on mission.
Riley had just turned eighteen and felt more alone than ever.
He became fueled by rage and the need for revenge, retracing his steps, finding the steps of those Resistance members, and tracking them for a few weeks. Eventually, he had found one of the members and tackled him, holding him down with a knife to his throat. He had him in his grasp, but something about him had caused Riley to spare his life (aside from the fact that this boy was not the one who killed Roman). Maybe it was his eyes, a deep red-brown, that caused Riley’s downfall from everything he had so carefully set up. The two of them found themselves running into each other, leading to them both having each other’s backs. They had fallen in love and their running into each other became less of an accident and more of a plan.
They had both thought of running away from Anrui, going to a new region might not have been such a bad idea. Lukas didn’t want to leave behind the people he was working hard to protect, Riley having a similar outlook on the issue. They had spent two years together, carefully moving about the region so that they wouldn’t be caught. Lukas had ordered a special necklace for Riley, a platinum black chain with a silver square pendant on it, the inscription With All My Heart on the back of it. As said, Riley falls hard when it comes to love, and he certainly did it with this one, like a meteor crashing into the earth. A few months later, they both became engaged.
It was a short-lived engagement. They had not been careful enough and during one of their meetings, they were ambushed by members of Plasma. Lukas fought them, Riley fought them, trying to protect the one thing that mattered to him. His Pokemon could wreak havoc but were overpowered and caged up, thrashing at the bars to reach Riley. He didn’t see them after that, his eyes on Lukas as both of them were brought to their knees, guns pointed at their heads. Several minutes passed as radios went off about what to do and how things should proceed. It came out of nowhere when the member with their gun on Lukas shot him directly after a ’Roger that.’ Riley was knocked out.
When he woke up, he found himself chained to the wall, the locks uncomfortable around his wrists. He had been charged with treason and conspiracy, but due to his history of technique, was spared a death sentence (in which he wished that they would change their mind about). He would be whipped until he was nearly dead, sent back to his cell to heal, whipped again, the process continuing repeatedly. On other days, they would strap him to a table – a psychic type Pokemon in front of him – and force him to relive the moment that Lukas had been shot at least once a week, for several hours. Eventually, the only thing he felt was a numbness in his heart. For six years this continued, until the fated day that he was sent to bathe and dress and go to a meeting with Antoinette herself.
She released him for good behavior, mostly because she broke him and knew it. He had learned his lesson, or so maybe she thought, and though he did not reclaim his Pokemon and past position, he was free. Or something like that. He was still made to live with members of Plasma who would be forced to watch him, Zeus and Erich. It was all short-lived, but it happened regardless. Zeus and Riley just didn’t click together right and spent more times annoying the other than getting anything done. Erich was different for him, but they had grown closer and a relationship was beginning to form and that terrified Riley, the thought of loosing something so great heavy in his mind. It had almost happened once, and he couldn’t take that possibility happening again, debating on how he should walk away from it. However, he wasn’t given the decision to leave on his own terms.
He had been out on mission when he was ambushed by Resistance members. It was an irony and he even thought that he would be killed. At least, he was sure of it until he saw who led the group of rebels. His brother Ashton had stepped up and demanded that he be taken with them. Now a prisoner at one point for two separate groups.
You could saw that Riley was happy to see his brother after all these years. You would also be completely wrong about it, as Riley was pissed. They removed his knives and placed them in an unknown area, never to be seen by him again. They tried to snatch up his Pokemon as well, but he threatened each one of them if they did. Instead, Ashton took them with the promise that he would get them back and, though Riley hates his brother, he reluctantly handed them over. At least his prison was much more accommodating than the last one had been. He had been placed in a padded room at first, a temporary place, until his brother’s own room was given bared windows and several locks on the doors. For weeks, Ashton attempted to convert him from Plasma to the Resistance. In a part of Riley’s heart, his brother didn’t have to do this, the part of his heart that still loved Lukas tied him to the Resistance’s cause for the rest of his life. In a different way anyways. Perhaps cooking breakfast for the little brother that you hadn’t seen in years wasn’t the way to inspire one to change sides.
After months of being stuck there, he thought he would never be able to leave, not until someone intentionally left the door open. When he peered out the door, he found a bag against the wall, his Pokeballs placed carefully inside along with a few other things. He sneaked out as casually as he could and broke into a run as soon as he was outside. He thought about going back to Erich’s place, to explain everything but he just wasn’t sure about it. Instead, he got himself a hotel for the night and began thinking of what steps he should take next.
